Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Detroit, Michigan, also known as Motown and the Motor City, has a rich and dynamic history. Founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Detroit quickly became a major trading post and hub for fur traders and Native American tribes. As the population grew, Detroit became a key location in the War of 1812 and played a crucial role in the Underground Railroad. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Detroit became a center of industrial innovation, particularly in the automobile industry. The city was home to the headquarters of the “Big Three” automakers – Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler – and played a pivotal role in the development of the assembly line. However, Detroit also faced challenges, particularly with racial tensions and economic decline in the latter half of the 20th century. Despite this, the city has experienced a revitalization in recent years, with a renewed focus on arts, culture, and entrepreneurship. Today, Detroit is a vibrant city with a diverse population and a thriving arts and music scene.
