Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Destin, Florida, originally settled by Native Americans, was first officially established in the early 1800s by Leonard Destin, a fisherman from New London, Connecticut. Destin quickly became known for its abundant fishing opportunities, leading to the growth of a thriving fishing community. In the late 1800s, the town experienced a boom with the opening of the first hotel and post office. The community continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, attracting tourists with its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. During World War II, Destin became home to a military training base, further boosting its economy and population. In the following decades, the city evolved into a popular vacation destination, with the construction of luxury resorts and golf courses. Today, Destin is renowned for its stunning beaches, world-class fishing charters, and vibrant culinary scene. The city continues to attract visitors from around the world, maintaining its reputation as a premier vacation spot in the Florida Panhandle.
