Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Davenport, Iowa is a city with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire and several other settlers. Originally named “Rockingham” after a nearby Native American village, the city was later renamed Davenport in honor of a soldier who fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Davenport grew rapidly due to its location along the Mississippi River, which allowed for easy transportation of goods and materials. The city became a major industrial center, known for its production of lumber, grain, and farm machinery. In the late 20th century, Davenport experienced a decline in manufacturing but has since undergone revitalization efforts to attract new businesses and residents. Today, Davenport is a vibrant city with a diverse economy, thriving arts and culture scene, and strong sense of community pride. It remains an important hub in the Midwest region and continues to grow and evolve while honoring its rich history.
