Corvallis, Oregon, located in the Willamette Valley, has a rich history that dates back to the 1840s when settlers first began to arrive in the area. Originally inhabited by the Kalapuya Native American tribe, the land was eventually settled by white pioneers seeking fertile farmlands. In 1845, Joseph C. Avery arrived in the area and laid claim to a parcel of land which would eventually become the city of Corvallis. The town was officially established in 1851 and named after the Latin phrase “heart of the valley.” Throughout the 19th century, Corvallis flourished as an agricultural hub, with crops like wheat and hazelnuts being grown in abundance. In the 20th century, Corvallis became known for its thriving timber industry and the establishment of Oregon State University in 1868 brought a new level of intellectual and cultural sophistication to the city. Today, Corvallis is a vibrant community known for its environmentalism, outdoor recreation opportunities, and strong sense of community pride.
