Founded in 1828, Columbus, Georgia owes its name to Christopher Columbus. The city was strategically located on the Chattahoochee River, which provided access to trade routes and transportation. During the Civil War, Columbus played a key role as a major Confederate supply hub, resulting in significant damage and destruction by Union forces. After the war, Columbus quickly rebuilt and became a thriving industrial center, known for its textile mills and ironworks. The city also embraced education, with the establishment of the first public school in Georgia in 1869. Local entrepreneur Joel Hurt played a significant role in the city’s growth, founding the Columbus Ironworks and later the Springer Opera House. Today, Columbus is a vibrant city known for its historical architecture, Southern charm, and outdoor recreational opportunities. The city has preserved many historic sites and buildings, including the Columbus Museum and the National Infantry Museum. With a diverse economy and strong sense of community, Columbus continues to thrive as a dynamic city in Georgia.
