Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbus, Georgia was founded in 1828 and named after Christopher Columbus. The city quickly grew due to its strategic location along the Chattahoochee River, which provided valuable transportation and trade opportunities. In the mid-19th century, Columbus became a major hub for the cotton industry, with many large plantations surrounding the city. During the Civil War, Columbus was a key Confederate supply center and was spared from the destruction that many other Southern cities faced. After the war, Columbus experienced a period of economic growth and industrialization, becoming known for its textile mills and ironworks. In the 20th century, Columbus continued to prosper, with the establishment of Fort Benning nearby bringing economic stability to the area. Today, Columbus is a thriving city known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and strong sense of community. It has also become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with its proximity to the Chattahoochee River providing ample opportunities for recreation and relaxation.
