Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbia, Missouri, founded in 1821, was established as the county seat of Boone County. The city was strategically located at the intersection of the Missouri River and the newly constructed Boone’s Lick Trail, making it an ideal location for trade and transportation in the region. In the early years, Columbia served as a hub for settlers moving westward on the Oregon Trail and played a significant role in the development of central Missouri. The city quickly grew in population and became a center for education and culture with the founding of the University of Missouri in 1839. During the Civil War, Columbia was occupied by Union troops and experienced significant damage and destruction. However, the city quickly recovered and continued to thrive in the post-war years. Today, Columbia is a vibrant city known for its strong economy, lively arts scene, and diverse population. It remains a center for education and research with the University of Missouri continuing to play a vital role in the community.
