Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1821, Columbia has a rich history as a hub of education and culture in the heart of Missouri. Named for Christopher Columbus, the city was strategically located at the convergence of the Missouri and Osage Rivers, making it an important stop for travelers heading westward. In the mid-19th century, Columbia became home to the University of Missouri, the first public university west of the Mississippi River. The university quickly established itself as a center for learning and research, attracting students and scholars from across the country. During the Civil War, Columbia was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces, resulting in skirmishes and destruction throughout the city. However, in the years following the war, Columbia experienced a period of growth and prosperity, becoming a thriving community with a diverse economy based on agriculture, industry, and education. Today, Columbia continues to thrive as a vibrant city with a strong commitment to education, culture, and community.
