Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbia, Missouri was established in 1821, chosen as the site for the state’s new university due to its central location within the state. The city quickly grew around the university, which was chartered in 1839. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Columbia thrived as a center of education, commerce, and culture in Missouri. During the Civil War, the town was divided between Union and Confederate sympathizers, leading to several skirmishes and raids. After the war, Columbia experienced a period of rapid growth and development, with the establishment of industries such as manufacturing and agriculture. In the 20th century, Columbia continued to grow and diversify, becoming known for its vibrant arts scene, innovative businesses, and progressive politics. Today, the city is home to a diverse population, including students, professionals, and families, and is known for its strong sense of community and cultural diversity.
