Blacksburg, Virginia was founded in 1798 by William Black, a Scottish merchant who sought to establish a trading post in the lush valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Initially a small settlement known as “Black’s Fort,” the town grew rapidly as more pioneers and settlers moved into the area seeking opportunities for land and resources. As the town expanded, it became an important hub for agriculture, trade, and education. In 1872, the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College was established in Blacksburg, now known as Virginia Tech, becoming a major economic and cultural force in the region. During the Civil War, Blacksburg saw limited action but suffered economic hardship as a result of the conflict. However, in the years following the war, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity as industry and commerce flourished. Today, Blacksburg is a vibrant college town known for its historic downtown, outdoor recreation opportunities, and innovative technology sector. Its rich history and scenic beauty continue to attract visitors and residents alike.
