Baton Rouge, Louisiana, located along the Mississippi River, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the early 18th century. Originally settled by French colonists, the city was named “Baton Rouge,” which means “red stick” in French, after a red cypress pole that marked the boundary between hunting grounds of the Houma and Bayou Goula Native American tribes. In 1699, French explorer Sieur d’Iberville claimed the area for France, and it became the capital of the French colony of La Louisiane. After changing hands to the Spanish in 1763, and then back to the French in 1800, Baton Rouge became part of the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Today, Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and is known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant music scene, and delicious Cajun and Creole cuisine. The city is also home to Louisiana State University and Southern University, adding to its dynamic and diverse community.
