Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1699 by French explorer Sieur d’Iberville. The city’s name, which means “red stick” in French, is believed to have been inspired by a blood-stained pole marking the boundary between Native American tribes. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Baton Rouge served as a crucial trading post and military stronghold, with control of the city changing hands between the French, Spanish, British, and Americans multiple times. The city played a significant role in the Civil War, with the Union capturing and occupying Baton Rouge in 1862. In the late 19th century, Baton Rouge experienced a period of economic growth, driven by the lumber and petrochemical industries. The construction of the Louisiana State Capitol building in the 1930s solidified the city’s status as the state capital. Today, Baton Rouge is a vibrant and diverse city known for its cultural heritage, Southern hospitality, and thriving arts and culinary scene.
