Augusta, Georgia, known as the “Garden City,” has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1736. The city was established as a trading post by British General James Oglethorpe along the Savannah River. Over the years, Augusta grew into a bustling center of commerce and industry, attracting settlers from all walks of life. In the 19th century, Augusta became a major player in the cotton industry, with its cotton warehouses and mills driving the city’s economy. The city also played a significant role in the Civil War, serving as a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces. In the 20th century, Augusta continued to thrive, becoming known for its golf courses and hosting the prestigious Masters Tournament annually. Today, Augusta is a vibrant city with a diverse population, thriving arts scene, and strong economy, while still maintaining its southern charm and historic appeal.
