Atlantic City, New Jersey, was founded in the early 19th century as a health resort. Initially known as Absecon Island, the area was renamed Atlantic City in 1854 in an effort to attract tourists and investors. The city experienced rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming a popular destination for vacationers seeking entertainment and relaxation. Atlantic City’s famous boardwalk was constructed in 1870 and quickly became a hub of activity, featuring hotels, shops, and amusement parks. The city’s economy boomed during this time, fueled by tourism and the booming gambling industry. In 1978, Atlantic City became the first location in the United States outside of Nevada to legalize gambling, leading to the construction of numerous casinos along the boardwalk. Despite economic challenges in recent years, Atlantic City remains a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world with its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and historic landmarks.
