Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

In the late 19th century, Atlantic City, New Jersey, was established as a resort destination by real estate developers seeking to capitalize on its pristine beaches and proximity to major cities like Philadelphia and New York. The city quickly became known for its luxurious hotels, bustling boardwalk, and popular attractions such as the Steel Pier and the Miss America Pageant. During the Prohibition era, Atlantic City gained notoriety for its thriving underground gambling scene, with speakeasies and illegal casinos operating openly. This reputation for vice would continue into the mid-20th century, as organized crime figures like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano used the city as a base of operations for their illicit activities. In the latter half of the 20th century, Atlantic City struggled with economic decline and urban decay, leading to the legalization of casino gambling in 1976. The introduction of legal gambling revitalized the city’s economy and transformed it into a major gaming destination, with iconic casinos like the Trump Taj Mahal and Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa drawing visitors from around the world. Today, Atlantic City remains a popular tourist destination, offering a mix of gaming, entertainment, and seaside attractions.
