Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Athens, Georgia, named after the ancient city in Greece, was founded in 1806 as the seat of Clarke County. Originally settled by European immigrants and Native Americans, Athens quickly grew into a bustling town due to its location on the Oconee River and fertile land for farming. In the early 19th century, Athens became known for its educational institutions, such as the University of Georgia, which was founded in 1785. The city played a significant role in the Civil War, serving as a center for military operations and a hospital for wounded soldiers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Athens experienced rapid industrialization, with textile mills and manufacturing plants driving economic growth. The city also became a hub for music and culture, with the emergence of local bands and venues that would later contribute to the development of the Athens music scene. Today, Athens is a vibrant college town and cultural hub, known for its live music scene, historic architecture, and thriving arts community.
