Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Asheville has a rich and diverse history. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived in the late 18th century. In 1784, Colonel Samuel Davidson settled in the area, establishing a small village that would eventually become Asheville. Throughout the 19th century, Asheville flourished as a popular health resort destination due to its mild climate and mountain air. The city’s economy boomed with the growth of the railroad industry, leading to the construction of grand hotels and estates that still stand today. In the early 20th century, Asheville became known for its arts and crafts movement, attracting creatives such as author Thomas Wolfe and artist George Masa. The city also gained national attention with the construction of the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately-owned house in the United States. Today, Asheville continues to thrive as a cultural hub, known for its vibrant arts scene, local breweries, and stunning natural beauty.
