Ann Arbor, Michigan was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, who named the city after their wives, both named Ann. Originally a small farming community, Ann Arbor quickly grew into a bustling town thanks to its prime location along the Huron River and proximity to the University of Michigan, which was established in 1837. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ann Arbor continued to flourish as a center for education, culture, and innovation. The city became known for its vibrant arts scene, music festivals, and progressive politics. Ann Arbor also played a significant role in the civil rights movement, with activists like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. making speeches and protests in the city. Today, Ann Arbor remains a thriving community with a strong focus on education, technology, and sustainability. It is home to a diverse population, world-class healthcare facilities, and a variety of cultural institutions that continue to attract residents and visitors alike.
