Anchorage, Alaska, originally inhabited by the Dena’ina Athabascan people, was officially founded in 1914 as a tent city for the construction of the Alaska Railroad. The city quickly grew with the discovery of gold in the area, attracting thousands of prospectors looking to strike it rich during the Klondike Gold Rush. During World War II, Anchorage became a strategic military base for the United States, leading to a rapid expansion of the city’s infrastructure and population. In 1964, Anchorage was hit by a devastating earthquake, causing widespread destruction but also sparking a massive rebuilding effort that modernized the city.
