Welcome to the Newto News for April of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in the late 19th century as a stop along the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad, Amarillo, Texas quickly grew into a bustling hub of commerce and trade. Originally named “Oneida,” the city was officially renamed Amarillo in 1887 after the Spanish word for yellow, a reference to the yellow wildflowers that cover the area during the summer months. Amarillo became known for its cattle industry, with large ranches and stockyards attracting cowboys and cattle drivers from across the region. The discovery of oil in the early 20th century further boosted the city’s economy and population, leading to rapid growth and development. Today, Amarillo is a thriving city known for its historic Route 66 attractions, vibrant arts scene, and famous Cadillac Ranch art installation. With a rich history rooted in ranching and oil production, Amarillo continues to be a major cultural and economic center in the Texas Panhandle.
