Japan Sees Record Surge in Deadly Bacterial Infections

Japan is reporting a record spike in deadly bacterial infections, with a record number of 977 cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) reported between January and March this year. STSS is a rare but fatal bacterial infection caused by streptococcus pyogenes, commonly known as group A strep bacteria. These infections can lead to organ failure, low blood pressure, and deep tissue damage. The health ministry in Japan is alarmed by the record levels of cases, which have surpassed the previous record of 941 cases. It is unclear how the dangerous bacteria got into the body of the people who get STSS.
