Williamsburg, Virginia was founded in 1699 as the capital of the Virginia Colony. Named in honor of King William III of England, the city quickly became a hub of political, economic, and cultural activity in the American colonies. In 1693, the College of William & Mary was established in Williamsburg, making it the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. During the American Revolution, Williamsburg played a key role in the fight for independence. The city was the site of the Virginia Convention where the decision to declare independence from Britain was made in 1776. After the capital was moved to Richmond in 1780, Williamsburg entered a period of decline. However, in the early 20th century, the city underwent a restoration project to preserve its historic buildings and reestablish its importance as a center of learning and culture. Today, Williamsburg is a popular tourist destination, known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and living history museums that bring the past to life for visitors.
