Springfield, Illinois was founded in 1819 by European Americans, but it was originally inhabited by the Illiniwek people. The city quickly became an important commercial and political center in the Midwest due to its location on the Sangamon River and its proximity to major transportation routes. In 1837, Springfield became the state capital of Illinois, solidifying its position as a political hub. Throughout its history, Springfield has been home to several notable figures, including Abraham Lincoln. The 16th President of the United States lived in Springfield for 17 years before moving to Washington D.C. Lincoln’s former home, as well as his tomb, are major tourist attractions in the city. Springfield has also played a significant role in African American history, as it was a key stop on the Underground Railroad and home to several prominent abolitionists. Today, Springfield continues to thrive as the capital of Illinois, with a rich history and vibrant cultural scene.
