Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe, Princeton, New Jersey was first settled by European colonists in the late 17th century. Originally known as Stony Brook, the town was renamed Princeton in 1739 in honor of Prince William of Orange. Princeton gained prominence during the American Revolutionary War when it served as the temporary capital of the United States in 1783, hosting the Continental Congress. The town became home to the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University, in 1756, solidifying its reputation as an intellectual and cultural hub. During the 19th century, Princeton continued to grow as a center for education and innovation, with the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Study in 1930 further cementing its reputation as a leading academic institution. Today, Princeton remains a thriving community known for its historic charm, prestigious university, and vibrant arts and culture scene.
