Originally inhabited by the Quinnipiac Native American tribe, New Haven, Connecticut was founded in 1638 by English Puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton. The settlement was established as a haven for religious freedom, with the signing of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in 1639, often regarded as the first written constitution in America. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, New Haven grew into a bustling hub of industry and trade, known for its manufacturing of firearms, clocks, and rubber products. The city also became a center for education and culture, with the founding of Yale University in 1701 and the opening of the New Haven Green, a public park and gathering place. In the 20th century, New Haven experienced economic decline due to the decline of its manufacturing sector, but has since undergone revitalization efforts, becoming a vibrant city with a thriving arts and culinary scene, historic architecture, and a diverse population. Today, New Haven continues to be known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and academic institutions.
