Morgantown, West Virginia, has a rich history that dates back to the late 18th century. The city was founded in 1772 by Zackquill Morgan, a Virginia land speculator, and was originally known as “Morgan’s Town” in his honor. The town quickly grew in size and importance due to its location along the Monongahela River, which provided transportation for goods and people. During the Civil War, Morgantown was a key strategic point for both the Union and Confederate armies, with several small skirmishes taking place in the area. Following the war, the city saw a period of growth and prosperity with the development of industries such as coal mining and glass production. In the 20th century, Morgantown became known as a hub for education and innovation with the establishment of West Virginia University in 1867. Today, the city continues to thrive as a center for education, healthcare, and technology in the Mountain State.
