Situated in the western part of Montana, Missoula has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Blackfeet Native American tribes, who thrived in the fertile valleys and along the Clark Fork River. In the 19th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the abundant natural resources and the promise of land. The city of Missoula was officially established in 1860 and quickly grew as a hub for trade and transportation, with the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s further boosting the city’s economy. Missoula became known as a center for logging, mining, and agriculture, and the University of Montana was founded in 1893, bringing a strong educational influence to the city. Today, Missoula is a vibrant community known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, cultural events, and strong sense of community.
