Memphis, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by a group of investors including future president Andrew Jackson. Originally named after the ancient Egyptian city, Memphis quickly grew into a major transportation hub due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River. The city became known for its bustling cotton trade and saw rapid population growth in the mid-19th century. During the Civil War, Memphis was occupied by Union troops and served as a key supply base for the North. After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and rebuilding as freed slaves migrated to the area seeking employment opportunities. In the early 20th century, Memphis became a center for blues music, with legendary artists such as B.B. King and Elvis Presley calling the city home. Today, Memphis is known for its rich musical history, vibrant food scene, and cultural attractions such as Graceland and Beale Street.
