Manchester, New Hampshire, was founded in 1751 by settlers from Massachusetts as Derryfield. The town served as a hub for the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution, with numerous mills and factories springing up along the banks of the Merrimack River. In 1810, the town was renamed Manchester after the industrial city in England due to its similarities in booming industry. By the mid-19th century, Manchester was a major manufacturing center, producing textiles, shoes, and paper products. The city’s population grew rapidly as immigrants from Ireland, Quebec, and later Eastern Europe flocked to the city for employment opportunities. Throughout the 20th century, Manchester continued to thrive as a manufacturing hub but also diversified its economy with the growth of healthcare, education, and technology sectors. Today, Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire and boasts a vibrant cultural scene, historical sites, and a strong sense of community pride.
