Fort Wayne, Indiana was originally settled by the Miami Native American tribe in the early 19th century. In 1794, General Anthony Wayne ordered the construction of a fort at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee rivers, which would later become the city of Fort Wayne. The fort was built to protect the surrounding area from Native American attacks and to establish a trading post. Throughout the 19th century, Fort Wayne grew rapidly as a hub for trade and transportation, with the completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1835 and the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s.
