Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1739, Wilmington, North Carolina has a rich history dating back to the early colonial period. Originally settled by English colonists, Wilmington quickly grew into a bustling port city known for its thriving trade industry and strategic location along the Cape Fear River. During the American Revolution, Wilmington played a key role as a center for blockade-running, supplying goods to the Continental Army and evading British naval forces. In the years following the war, Wilmington continued to prosper as a major shipping hub, exporting naval stores, cotton, and other agricultural products. In the 19th century, Wilmington became one of the South’s largest cities and was home to a significant African American population. However, the city also experienced racial tensions, culminating in the violent Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, during which white supremacists overthrew the biracial city government. Today, Wilmington is a vibrant coastal city known for its historic downtown, beautiful beaches, and thriving arts and culture scene. The city continues to honor its past while embracing growth and innovation in the modern era.
