Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Wilmington, North Carolina was founded in 1739 and quickly became a bustling port city due to its prime location on the Cape Fear River. It thrived as a major hub for shipping and trade, importing goods such as cotton, tobacco, and lumber, and exporting naval stores and agricultural products. During the Civil War, Wilmington served as a Confederate stronghold and was a key port for blockade runners, allowing essential supplies to reach the Confederacy. The city also played a role in the Civil Rights Movement, with significant events such as the 1898 Wilmington Insurrection and the Wilmington Ten Trials in the 1970s. Today, Wilmington is a vibrant coastal city known for its historic district, beautiful beaches, and thriving arts scene. It is home to the University of North Carolina Wilmington and has become a popular filming location for movies and television shows. With its rich history and modern amenities, Wilmington continues to attract residents and visitors alike.
