Wilmington, Delaware, founded in 1638 by Swedish settlers, has a rich history rooted in commerce and industry. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Wilmington prospered as a major port city known for its shipbuilding and trading activities along the Delaware River. In the mid-19th century, the city underwent a period of rapid industrialization with the growth of the DuPont Company, a chemical manufacturing powerhouse that played a significant role in the city’s development.
