Wilmington, Delaware, originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribe, was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. The city was officially established in 1731 by the Swedish settlers, who named it after the Earl of Wilmington. Throughout its history, Wilmington has been a hub of industry and commerce. In the 19th century, the city became a major manufacturing center for textiles, machinery, and chemicals. Wilmington also played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, helping escaped slaves reach freedom in the north.
