Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Wilmington, Delaware was founded by Swedish settlers in 1638, making it one of the oldest cities in the United States. Initially called “Fort Christina,” the settlement quickly grew into a thriving trade center due to its strategic location along the Christina River. In 1739, the town was officially renamed Wilmington in honor of Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington and then Prime Minister of Great Britain. Throughout the 19th century, Wilmington became known for its industrial prowess, particularly in the manufacturing of textiles, machinery, and chemicals. The city played a vital role in supplying goods to Union troops during the Civil War, solidifying its position as a strong economic hub in the region. In the 20th century, Wilmington continued to develop as a center for finance and commerce, with numerous banks and corporations establishing headquarters in the city. Today, Wilmington is a diverse and vibrant city with a rich history and a bustling economy.
