Wilmington, Delaware, originally known as Fort Christina, was founded by Swedish colonists in 1638. The settlement grew quickly due to its strategic location on the Christina River, which provided access to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1739, the town was officially established and named after Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington.
