Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Waco, Texas was founded in 1849 along the banks of the Brazos River. Originally a small trading post, the city quickly grew in prominence due to its location on major transportation routes such as the Chisholm Trail and the Cotton Belt Railway. In the late 19th century, Waco became known for its cotton and cattle industries, leading to a period of economic prosperity. In 1886, Waco experienced a devastating tornado that resulted in significant damage to the city. However, this event did not hinder Waco’s growth, and it continued to thrive throughout the early 20th century as a hub for commerce and industry. In 1993, Waco gained national attention due to the tragic events at the Branch Davidian compound located just outside the city. Despite this dark moment in its history, Waco has since undergone a revitalization, becoming a vibrant community with a thriving downtown area, bustling cultural scene, and renowned educational institutions such as Baylor University. Today, Waco is known for its rich history, friendly residents, and picturesque riverfront setting.
