Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Virginia Beach, Virginia was originally inhabited by Algonquian-speaking tribes such as the Chesepian, Powhatan, and Nottoway. In 1607, English colonists led by Captain Christopher Newport landed at nearby Cape Henry, making it the first landing site of the Jamestown colonists. The area was later established as a part of Princess Anne County in 1691. In the 19th century, Virginia Beach became a popular destination for vacationers seeking the healing powers of the ocean. The city’s economy grew with the establishment of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues along the boardwalk. During World War II, Virginia Beach was home to a number of military installations, including the Naval Air Station Oceana and Fort Story. Following the war, the city experienced a population boom and began to develop into a major coastal resort. Today, Virginia Beach is a thriving city known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant tourism industry, and strong military presence. It continues to attract visitors from around the world with its rich history, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreational activities.
