Ventura, California, originally known as San Buenaventura, has a rich and diverse history dating back to Native American settlements in the area thousands of years ago. The city was officially founded in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra as a mission to convert the local Chumash people to Christianity. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Ventura prospered as a center for agriculture, particularly citrus and oil production. The city experienced growth with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s and became known for its beautiful beaches and charming downtown.
