Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Ventura, California, originally inhabited by the Chumash Native American tribe, was first explored by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. It was officially founded as San Buenaventura in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra, becoming the ninth mission established in California. Throughout the 19th century, Ventura grew as a small agricultural community, known for its citrus and oil industries. In the early 20th century, Ventura experienced a population boom with the development of the tourism and beach resort industry. The downtown area flourished with the construction of hotels, restaurants, and shops, attracting visitors from all over the country. During World War II, Ventura played a significant role as a military and naval base, contributing to the war effort. In the post-war years, Ventura continued to thrive as a popular coastal city with a vibrant arts and culture scene. Today, Ventura remains a charming seaside destination, known for its beautiful beaches, historic downtown, and outdoor recreational activities.
