Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Ventura, California, originally known as San Buenaventura, was founded in 1782 by Junipero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan missionary. The city’s name, which means “good fortune” in Spanish, was chosen by Serra in honor of Saint Bonaventure. Throughout its history, Ventura has been a hub of agriculture, trade, and tourism. In the early 1800s, the city became an important stop on the El Camino Real, a trade route that connected the Spanish missions in California. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ventura experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The discovery of oil in the area in the 1920s further bolstered the city’s economy. Today, Ventura is known for its beautiful beaches, historic downtown district, and vibrant arts and culture scene. The city continues to attract visitors from around the world, drawn to its rich history and natural beauty.
