Tyler, Texas was founded in 1846 by John Neely Bryan, a lawyer and land speculator. The city was named after President John Tyler and quickly became a hub for trade and commerce in East Texas. During the Civil War, Tyler was a major supplier of goods and materials to the Confederate army. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth, attracting settlers from all over the country seeking new opportunities in the burgeoning oil and cotton industries.
