Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples such as the Cherokee and Choctaw tribes, Tuscaloosa, Alabama’s history dates back thousands of years. European exploration and settlement began in the 16th century, with the area eventually becoming a hub of trade and commerce along the Black Warrior River. The city was officially founded in 1819 and named after Tuskaloosa, a paramount chief of the Mississippian culture. Tuscaloosa quickly grew into a center of industry and education, with the establishment of the University of Alabama in 1831. During the Civil War, Tuscaloosa played a strategic role as a major Confederate supply depot and military manufacturing center. The city was heavily damaged during the war but experienced a period of growth and reconstruction in the years that followed. Today, Tuscaloosa is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic architecture, and thriving economy, making it a unique and dynamic city in the heart of the American South.
