Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama was founded in 1819 and named after the Chief Tuskaloosa, a Native American leader of the Mississippian culture. The city quickly grew into a hub for agriculture and commerce, thanks to its location on the Black Warrior River. In the mid-19th century, Tuscaloosa became the capital of Alabama and developed a strong industrial base, including textile mills and iron foundries. During the Civil War, Tuscaloosa played a significant role as a Confederate stronghold and was the site of a major battle in 1865, resulting in the destruction of much of the city. In the aftermath of the war, Tuscaloosa focused on rebuilding and diversifying its economy. Today, Tuscaloosa is known for being the home of the University of Alabama, which was established in 1831. The university has played a crucial role in the city’s cultural and economic development, attracting students and visitors from around the world. Tuscaloosa continues to thrive as a vibrant and diverse community with a rich history and promising future.
