Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Tucson, Arizona has a long and rich history dating back over 4,000 years. Originally inhabited by the Hohokam people, the city’s name is believed to have come from the O’odham phrase “Cuk Son,” which translates to “at the base of the black hill.” In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area and established a presidio and mission, laying the foundation for European settlement. Over the years, Tucson became a key stop along the Santa Fe Trail and served as a military outpost during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. In the late 19th century, the arrival of the railroad and the discovery of silver and copper mines spurred rapid growth and development in the city. Today, Tucson is a vibrant cultural hub known for its diverse population, thriving arts scene, and stunning desert landscapes. With a mix of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences, Tucson continues to celebrate its unique heritage while looking towards the future.
