Toledo, Ohio was founded in 1833 on the western shore of Lake Erie by Edward Smith, a fur trader, and Jesup W. Scott, a land speculator. The city quickly grew as a transportation hub due to its strategic location on the Great Lakes and near the Miami and Erie Canal.
