Toledo, Ohio was founded in 1833 on the banks of the Maumee River by a group of investors led by Jesup Scott, who named the city after the Spanish city of Toledo. Initially, Toledo was a major trading post and transportation hub due to its location on the Great Lakes and its access to the Miami and Erie Canal. As the city grew, it became known for its manufacturing industry, particularly in glass production. Toledo was dubbed the “Glass City” for its numerous glass factories and skilled glassworkers.
