Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Toledo, Ohio was founded in 1833 on the western shore of the Maumee River by a group of settlers led by Major Benjamin Franklin Stickney. Originally a small trading post, Toledo quickly grew in importance due to its strategic location near the Great Lakes and its access to major transportation routes, including the Erie Canal and later the railroads. The city became known for its glass industry, with companies like Libbey Glass and Owens-Illinois establishing headquarters there. Toledo also became a major hub for the manufacturing of automobile parts, earning it the nickname “The Auto Parts Capital of the World.” Throughout its history, Toledo has been a center of innovation and industry, as well as a hub for transportation and commerce. Today, it is known for its thriving arts community, vibrant downtown area, and diverse population.
