Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Syracuse, New York, founded in 1806 by the European settlers, has a rich and vibrant history. Originally inhabited by the Onondaga Native American tribe, the area saw an influx of European settlers in the early 19th century, drawn by its strategic location between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. Syracuse quickly became known for its thriving salt industry, earning it the nickname “The Salt City”. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 further solidified Syracuse’s importance as a transportation hub, leading to rapid growth and prosperity. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Syracuse continued to grow and evolve, becoming a center for industry, education, and culture in Upstate New York. The city played a significant role in the abolitionist movement, as well as the women’s suffrage movement. Today, Syracuse is a vibrant and diverse city, known for its universities, museums, and dynamic arts scene. Its rich history and forward-thinking spirit make Syracuse a truly unique and fascinating place to call home.
