Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Stockton, California was founded in 1849 by Captain Charles Maria Weber, a German immigrant who established the city as a port and supply center during the California Gold Rush. Originally named Tuleburg, the city’s name was changed to Stockton in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, a naval officer who played a key role in the American takeover of California. Stockton quickly grew into a prosperous city due to its strategic location on the San Joaquin River, which allowed for easy access to the surrounding agricultural regions. The city became known for its thriving shipping industry, as well as its diverse population of immigrants from around the world who came to seek their fortunes in California. Throughout its history, Stockton has faced challenges such as economic downturns and natural disasters, including the devastating 1862 flood that submerged much of the city. However, Stockton has always proven to be resilient, bouncing back and continuing to thrive as one of California’s most important cities. Today, Stockton is known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and strong sense of community.
